Delta Air Lines, Air France and SkyTeam Cargo Help Atlanta’s Carlos Museum Fly Ancient Mummy Home

ATLANTA, Oct. 24, 2003 – As Atlanta’s hometown airline, Delta Air Lines (NYSE: DAL) is proud to help Emory University’s Michael C. Carlos Museum transport the mummy of Pharaoh Ramesses I to his ancestral home in Egypt.

Delta Air Logistics, Delta’s cargo division, will ship Ramesses aboard Flight 22, its daily Boeing 777 service from Atlanta to Paris-Charles de Gaulle. Ramesses will travel as high-priority, Variation – Art freight in the belly of the aircraft and will be transferred in Paris to SkyTeam Cargo partner Air France, which will provide connecting transportation to Cairo on Flight 528, also a Boeing 777.

All transportation will be provided at no cost by both carriers.
“We are proud to support our community by transporting Ramesses I to Cairo,” said Tony Charaf, senior vice president-Delta Air Logistics and a member of the Carlos Museum’s Board of Directors. “As the top U.S. carrier across the Atlantic and as a strong supporter of the Atlanta community, Delta is uniquely positioned to provide this logistical assistance to Emory and the Carlos Museum.”

Once in Egypt, Ramesses I will be exhibited in the Luxor Museum as part of a display on the ancient Egyptian military. The mummy is being returned as a goodwill gesture from the people of Atlanta to the people of Egypt
Variation – Art is one of the common products offered for international freight by the members of SkyTeam Cargo – Aeromexico, Air France, Alitalia, CSA Czech Airlines, Delta and Korean Air. Variation – Art is a product for one-off arrangements and specialized logistics to ship artworks in optimal conservation and security conditions. Each shipment is carried out to specific instructions in complete transparency and optimal security and is handled with special care during ground transport at each airport.

The mummy will travel in a packing system designed to resist impact and cushion against vibration. Throughout his 6,390-mile journey by air, Ramesses I will rest on a rigid support board with padding and will be encased in sheets of foam that have been custom-cut to fit his body’s contours.

The mummy-foam package will be surrounded by an archival cardboard box nested inside a wooden crate, which will be lined with 4 inches of foam, and suspended inside a larger wood crate with high density foam blocks to hold the inner crate in position. The entire nested crate system will be sealed and loaded into the Boeing 777 on a secure pallet.
